A Current Management Problem

A current management problem that I am dealing with now is how to get to work on time from school every Fridays for the rest of this semester. I take FIN 3000 from 8.15 till 11.10 in the morning every Friday. I have to catch an 11.45 train back to Long Island to get to work by one however, the professor likes to hold us back for an extra twenty to twenty-five minutes. I am always running to the subway to try to make it to the LIRR on time however, due to the late release I had missed my train last week and arrived to work half an hour late. I don't want to get up and leave class because I am afraid that he will state something important or something that will be on upcoming exams and, because the class only meets once a week it is very hard to get in contact with the professor on a daily basis. I can't afford to arrive to work either because a work on a client basis and being even fifteen minutes late will mess my work schedule for the rest of the day.

  1. I never had a professor who went over for more than 10 minutes. If I had your professor, I also would be late for work for sure. If you have an appointment, you can note a classmate's contact to ask the person if you miss something in case you leave earlier. I wouldn't feel bad about leaving earlier because we made our schedule according to the official class time.

  2. I took FIN 3000 last semester and I had exactly the same problem. It is definitely a tough situation. I don’t really understand why some professors always feel the need to go over the schedule class time. I don’t think you should feel bad about leaving when class is supposed to end, when I took the class everyone would just start walking out of the class even thought the professor was still teaching. My best advice would be to ask other students around you if you missed something important. You can also just email the whole class I bet someone will reply. From my pass experience you really don’t miss out on that much at least not something you would not be able to pick up if you read the chapter and do the assigned problems. Just don’t miss the review classes or find someone that takes good notes. Good luck!

  3. As Claudia and Thuy said, I think it would be a good idea to get some of your classmates' contact information. That way you can contact them and ask what the professor went over. Be sure to find someone who take good notes. Currently I am taking FIN 3000 (Friday class) and from what I can tell, everything the professor went over is directly in the book. Good luck

  4. I can relate to you, I'm in the same situation and really find that teacher who tend to go over the time limit are usually the one's who are unprepared. I wouldn't have any problem leaving because we based our schedule on the time we registered for, plus I'm sure that there will be someone in the class who can fill you in if your missing anything.

  5. I understand your frustration. I too commute from Long Island, 4 hours every day. Last semester I would miss the train twice a week because I would wait in the subway for a train. Now, I walk. If you hustle it takes 15-20 minutes. Not bad if you don't mind walking. Get filled in from someone who takes good notes. But I definitely suggest the walk. Good Luck!!

  6. I agree with what they said. it's not a good thing that you miss the train and mess up the schedule for the rest of day. You better ask your classmates for notes than staying in class for notes.

  7. This is like a really late post for me =P because I didn't write a respond to a third person. I counted the professor's post as the third one on my list and he's now saying it doesn't count!
Wow! You're a hard working person. I know with the trains you always have to wait very long after you miss it. I always have that problem with the trains and get to work 5-10 minutes late. Maybe you can try and talk to the professor about this problem so he won't hold you guys back or at least not for that long. It really sucks to rush and annoying waiting when you know you'll be late. NYC Transits sucks like crazy. I take the train to class and the ride's like only half an hour but the waiting already too up another half hour so it takes me a whole hour or more just to get to school I always get irritated when that happens. Hope your problem will resolve soon.
